to Start a Business
Receive guidance from experienced business consultants
in laying a foundation for accurate analysis of your
business idea. Small Business Development Center Director,
Julie Morey, will address licensing requirements, the
business planning process, and how to apply for a business
loan. The registration fee includes the “How to

Designed for new business start-ups, this class focuses
on how to set up business accounting records, how to
track income and expenses, and what type of expenses

Understanding Bookkeeping & Financial Statements II
This class, designed for new and existing businesses,
will help you gain better control of your business by
learning how balance sheets, income statements, and
cash flow projections are prepared and what they can
tell you about your business. Instructor: Helen Roe
Helen Roe works with the Loan Fund of Mesa County and was recognized as the 2005-2006 Outstanding Woman Accountant by the American Society of Women Accountants. Taxes and the
Small Business Owner
This informative presentation will help simplify some
otherwise confusing business tax issues.

Instructor, Pamela J. Belcher CPA, specializes in
assisting business owners with bookkeeping, taxes, payroll,
business planning strategies and will be here to discuss
business expense items such as depreciation, home office,
computers, automobile usage, and
independent contractors vs. employees.
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Colorado Department of Revenue representative Bruce
Kolisek as well as representatives from the Department
of Labor Employment will discuss state withholding taxes,
sales tax issues, and unemployment and use tax.

Leading
Edge
The Leading Edge program is an intensive training course
for existing small business owners or those who are
considering starting a business. The program provides
expert guidance in the areas of marketing, financial
analysis, pricing, cash flow management, personnel and
legal issues. Through this program, you will focus on
every aspect of your business, including advanced strategies,
cash flows, and financial analysis. You will:
- Gain new insights on the business
planning process,
- Learn to accurately forecast your
business’ condition, months into the future,
- Understand what your financial statements
mean and how to use them in managing your business,
and
- Acquire skills and confidence you
need to face your competition and expand your business.
You will receive assistance in preparing
a business plan. Writing and reviewing a business plan
helps owners organize their business and get it moving
in the right direction. At the completion of the course,
your business plan is your thesis, your diploma, and
is widely respected.
The Leading Edge program includes
36 hours of intensive training and a minimum of 3.5
hours of individual consultation. The course is offered
every spring and fall and is held on Monday evenings
from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The Fall Leading Edge
class starts August 28 and ends Noveember 18. The fee is $275 per person
and includes NxLevel Guide for Entrepreneurs and NxLevel
Business Plan Workbook & Resource Guide. This course is also offered in the spring.
Human Resources Management 101
Bechtel & Santo, LLP will discuss contents and maintenance of personnel files, including written reprimands and performance appraisals. Autopaychecks, Inc. will present payroll and benefits taxation. Global Rainmakers will discuss retaining employees in a tight labor market.
