Meet Harvey Tashiro-SBDC Business Coach

In my career I’ve worked in hotel sales and marketing for 7 years before starting my own business, Tashiro Marketing & Advertising in Vail, Colorado from 1978-1998. I created a specialized agency in the hospitality industries with client primarily in tourism and resort areas in the 4 state Rocky Mountain region. My clients included hotels, hotel property management companies, resorts, community convention and tourism bureaus and chamber resort associations. The primary emphasis of my business was in taking an entire marketing budget and developing the marketing and media plan and advertising strategy and then implementing the program. In house capabilities of my company included focus group testing, market research, database management, community overnight visitor rate and occupancy analysis, media research and buying, creative development and marketing budget control.

I then retired at age 52 and bought a farm in Palisade to grow organic peaches. It’s been fun to be creative in applying some different marketing approaches to selling peaches. Whereby most conventional fruit growers try to harvest the largest crop load possible, based on the premise that tonnage determines gross sales. I’ve taken a different approach by growing few, high quality peaches and finding niche markets that would pay the highest premium prices, resulting in a greater net income with lower related expenses.
